‘Zeolights’ CALENDULA (aka Pot Marigold)
‘Zeolight’ CALENDULA Calendula officinalis (aka. Pot Marigold) ~ Organic Seeds
35 seeds / packet ~ $3 (Many Packets Available)
(60 days) This fancy version of the medicinal cottage-garden flower makes other calendulas look plain. Zeolights’ bronzy-apricot-peach petals fade to a delicate light pink. The petals’ rusty maroon reverse with a dark reddish-brown eye make them a standout in the garden. Add the edible petals to salads and sandwiches or use as a garnish for a pretty touch.
Veggie Garden Tip: I plant calendula, rather than marigolds, around the edges of the garden or in-between veggie plants. They are easier to grow (for me) and with a profuse blooming habit, very reliable at attracting pollinators. (See photo of calendula interspersed with peppers…where are the peppers?)
OR use them as a fantastic addition to market bouquets and large arrangements. Pick when flowers are ½ way open. With flower food, expect a vase life of 6-7 days. Foliage is sticky, so wear gloves when harvesting.
Calendula are semi-hardy annuals and survive a mild frost. They also can be grown as starts and transplanted into the garden, but it’s easy enough to just sow the seeds and let them go! They will also self-sow, so you can depend on having your own seed source for future gardens.
